In 2018, Edison & Day approached Somerset Care regarding the supply of furniture and soft furnishings across the group. The initial meeting made it clear that there were issues with their current supply. After identifying their needs, Edison & Day set out to find a solution to their problem.
The overriding problem that Somerset Care was experiencing was the lead times of the overall supply of furniture and soft furnishings.
They had appointed no single supplier responsible for the supply and as a result, Somerset Care were juggling multiple contacts with many service levels. There was no real fluidity in the service. Refurbishment of a single bedroom was taking approximately 28 days.
There was also a concern that each of the bedrooms were looking like many of the care homes up and down the country with little setting Somerset Care apart from the competition aesthetically.
The negative effects of long lead times and room downtime in the care environment lead to a significant loss of revenue per room. Each week a room was out of commission for refurbishment, they lost a weekly fee that was unrecoverable.
More important to this however, was the disruption to new residents wishing to enter Somerset’s care, pressuring both the company, the resident and the resident’s families.
Edison & Day has been a leader in rolling refurbishments of bedrooms for over a decade. For Somerset Care we wanted to tailor a package for the company, mirroring our Sister company Dayex’s fast turnaround service. To help Somerset Care meet their goals we:
Pre Designed Bedroom Schemes
We worked with Somerset care to tailor 5 pre-designed room schemes for use by both the property team and the home operatives. These room schemes include specified fabrics for drapery and soft furnishing accessories and neutral upholstery fabrics for chairs and headboards.
Bespoke Bedroom Furniture
Furthermore, we designed a brand-new range of furniture in line with Somerset Care’s specific needs for both their residents and their staff. This includes a wardrobe with an integrated lockable cabinet and a pull out tray for easy dispensing by the care staff.
The “Somerset” Range of furniture included bevelled edges on the door and drawer fronts that, when in a lit environment, create a level of contrast between each drawer to help identify to residents which drawer is which.
We coupled high contrasting rounded edge handles with a pressed recess behind them to ensure a comfortable experience for the residents eliminating the risk of fingers getting caught, etc.
We also added ultra-rounded tops to the units to ensure residents could navigate their rooms without the risk of bumping into sharp corners.
Design Manual For Easy Ordering
Edison & Day created a design to make ordering easy for Somerset Care. This manual acts as a brochure for the homes and contains all the information to ensure the desired “Somerset” look is being achieved across the group’s 27 homes.
The Service Level Agreement
Our promise to Somerset care was to deliver everything mentioned above in 10 working days. This lead time is one that allows the estates team to refurbish the entire room including new carpet/flooring, newly painted walls and brand new furniture and soft furnishings in its entirety, ready for their new resident to have a comfortable transition into care.
Following a 3 month trial in the latter part of 2018, Somerset Care awarded Edison & Day an exclusive ongoing contract for the supply of bedroom furniture and soft furnishings across the group. Edison & Day also now happily consult and supply further furniture for the group's communal area projects run by the estates team.
